Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)

What is a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)?

BPSO logo

Best Practice Spotlight Organizations (BPSOs) are health-care and academic organizations selected by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) through a request for proposals process to implement and evaluate the RNAO’s best practice guidelines.

It is a dynamic partnership that focuses on making a positive impact on patient care though evidence-based practice. Requests for proposals are released every three years. The Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative has been a great success. It provides support to organizations that have formally agreed to implement and evaluate multiple RNAO best practice guidelines over a three (3) year period.

First launched in 2003, the BPSO initiative is an off-shoot of the RNAO’s Nursing Best Practice Guideline program which began in November 1999 and has since spread across Canada and to countries around the world.

Women’s College Hospital – BPSO Candidate

On April 1, 2012, Women’s College Hospital was selected by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) to be a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) candidate. Being a candidate provides an opportunity to receive dedicated funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and to have access to dedicated resources from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

On April 1, 2015, Women’s College Hospital achieved designation as a Best Practice Spotlight. The designation represents an ongoing commitment to facilitating and advancing Best Practice across the organization with access to dedicated resources from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

The WCH BPSO designation has been renewed twice, extending until April 2019, renewable every 2 years. With each designation, two new BPGs are implemented, and all others are sustained and spread within the organization. The Executive Sponsor for the initiative is Jennifer Price, Corporate Nurse & Professional Practice Executive.

Through our partnership with the RNAO, Women’s College Hospital is implementing the following RNAO Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs):

  • The Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in RetirAdult
  • Establishing Therapeutic Relationships
  • Developing and Sustaining Interprofessional Care

WCH has implemented and sustained 7 of the RNAO’s internationally recognized Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) over our 5 year involvement in the program and will implement an additional 2 BPGs over the next 2 years.

The Best Practice Guidelines provide a bridge between research and practice, ensuring the most current available knowledge is being applied to the care provided to patients and their families. They are reviewed every three years by expert panels of healthcare professionals, using rigorous research methodology. Though these guidelines were created by the RNAO, they are inter-professional, and can be applied by healthcare providers across the healthcare continuum.
